Efficiency Manitoba Windows and Doors Rebate

$100 per window or door, to a maximum of $2,000 per household. The product must be ENERGY STAR certified with at least triple-pane glass and carry an NRCan reference number in the format NR####-######-ES#. Primary residence only, replacing an existing unit between a heated and an unheated space. Garages, sunrooms and new openings are not eligible. Your application must be submitted within 90 days of installation and payment in full.

That 90-day window is where most homeowners lose the money. Norden Seal provides the NRCan reference numbers and invoice documentation at the time of installation, so you are not chasing paperwork on day 85.

Manitoba Hydro Home Energy Efficiency Loan

Windows and doors qualify for up to $7,500 on a five-year term at 6.20% annually (O.A.C.), with no down payment. Manitoba Hydro pays the contractor directly and the payments appear on your energy bill.

What is no longer available

The federal Canada Greener Homes Loan is closed. Natural Resources Canada states its funding is fully committed and new applications cannot be approved.

Winnipeg endures 113 days a year that never climb above freezing, the most of any major Canadian city, on Environment Canada’s climate normals. But the failure mode here is not the cold itself. It is the temperature gradient across the glass.

At minus 35°C outside and 21°C inside, a window is holding back a 56-degree difference across a few centimetres. On a double-pane unit with an aluminum spacer, the coldest surface in the whole assembly is the strip of glass right at the edge where that metal bridges inside to outside. Indoor humidity condenses there first, then freezes, then melts down onto the sill during the next warm stretch. Homeowners describe it as a leak. It is not a leak. It is a thermal bridge, and no amount of caulking fixes it.

The specification that solves it: triple-pane glazing with two low-emissivity coatings, a warm-edge Super Spacer in place of aluminum, argon fill between the panes, and multi-chambered uPVC frames with fusion-welded corners.

The Winnipeg problem nobody mentions in a quote

Large parts of Winnipeg sit on Red River clay. Geotechnical surveys name the Red River Valley, the Lake Agassiz basin and the City of Winnipeg among the most concentrated expansive-soil areas in Canada, ground that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Houses on it move, seasonally and over decades. A window opening in a Wolseley, Elmwood or St. Boniface home is frequently no longer square, and a unit measured off the old frame will bind, or leave a wedge-shaped gap that gets stuffed with insulation and hidden behind trim.
