Bay Windows

A bay window is three window units joined at an angle so the assembly projects out from the wall, adding usable floor space inside and pulling light in from three directions. The centre unit is normally fixed, with operating casements or sliders on the flanking angles. Norden Seal builds and installs bay windows across Winnipeg, Calgary, and Regina.

What Is a Bay Window?

A bay window is an assembly of three window units set at angles to each other, projecting outward from the wall of the house. The two side units are typically angled at 30 or 45 degrees from the wall, and the large centre unit sits parallel to it.

Because the assembly projects, a bay window creates a shelf inside the room, usually 16 to 24 inches deep. That shelf is what people turn into a window seat, a reading nook, or a plant ledge, and it is the reason a bay costs more than three flat windows: it needs a seat board, a head board, a small roof, insulation, and structural support.

Bay Window in Winnipeg and Calgary

Choosing a Bay Window

Typical configuration

A fixed picture window in the centre with a casement or slider on each flank, so the projecting glass stays uninterrupted and the ventilation comes from the sides.

When a bay window is the right choice

  • You want to add apparent floor space to a living or dining room.
  • You want a window seat, and you want it deep enough to actually sit on.
  • You want a defined architectural feature on a front elevation.

Understand before you commit

A bay projects into the exterior, so it needs its own roof and flashing, and it is a genuine structural alteration rather than a window swap. In a Prairie climate the seat board and head board must be insulated properly or the bay becomes the coldest corner of the room. This is not a job for a retrofit-only installer.

Three-Panel Bay Windows Built and Installed

Bay windows unique design comprises three or more windows installed together, in a way that extends beyond the walls of your home. This allows an abundance of natural light to flow into any space, creating a bright and lively atmosphere. Bay windows are often chosen to create more space in the room, and are often accompanied by a bay bench for reading or a plant garden.

Our bay windows add a unique architectural flair to any home. We at Norden Seal provide the best bay windows that are energy-efficient and come in an extensive range of sizes and shapes.

Bay Window vs Bow Window

Short version: a bay projects further on a narrower wall, a bow spans wider with a gentler curve. If you want a window seat, a bay gives you a deeper one for less money.

Units and shape

A bay is three units set at sharp angles, so it reads as a faceted projection. A bow is four to six units at shallow angles, so it reads as a curve.

Projection and floor space

A bay projects 16 to 24 inches from the wall. A bow projects 12 to 18 inches but spans much wider. That means a bay gives you a deeper interior shelf on a narrower wall, while a bow spreads light across a broad elevation.

Cost

A bow costs more. More units means more frames, more mullions, more seals, and a longer projecting roof to flash, and it returns less usable floor depth for the money.

Bay Window FAQs

A.

Bay windows are the most expensive residential window style, because the price covers far more than glass: three units, a seat board, a head board, a roof, flashing, insulation, and structural support. The Norden Seal installed cost ranges by size are listed in the table on this page. Expect a bay to cost several times a single casement of equivalent width.

A.

Yes. A bay projects out from the wall, so its weight has to be carried either by cable supports anchored into the header above or by knee brackets underneath. On a replacement, an existing bay usually has that support in place. On a new bay cut into a flat wall, a structural header is required and the work needs a permit.

A.

Often, yes. If the seat board, head board, roof and supports are sound, the three window units can be replaced within the existing bay structure. If the seat board is soft or the roof has leaked, the assembly should come out entirely. A dropped or rotted seat board is the most common reason an old bay needs full replacement.

A.

They can be, and it is almost always the seat board and head board rather than the glass. Those flat surfaces connect directly to the outside and are frequently under-insulated on older bays. A properly built bay has a fully insulated seat and head cavity and a warm-edge glass package, and performs as well as the wall around it.

A.

Most residential bay windows project 16 to 24 inches from the wall, which gives a seat board deep enough to sit on with cushions. A 45 degree bay projects deeper on the same wall width than a 30 degree bay. If the seat is the point of the project, specify the angle up front, because it changes the framing.

A.

A bay window uses three units set at angles, with a defined faceted shape. A bow window uses four to six units set at shallower angles to form a gentle curve. A bay projects further on a narrower wall, while a bow spans wider and projects less. Bays cost less and give a deeper seat.

The Norden Seal Difference

Know Exactly
What You Are Buying.

New windows and doors are a decision you live with for decades, so it is worth settling three things before you sign with anyone: what protects your investment, who carries out the work, and how well it suits your home and this climate. Here is where we stand on all three.

01

Strong Warranty &
Continued Support

White PVC frames and sashes, sealed units and hardware are covered for 25 years. Coloured PVC windows are covered for 15 years.

The coverage is non-prorated, so year twenty is protected on the same terms as year one, and it transfers to the next owner when the stated registration and transfer conditions are met. If something needs attention later, submit a service request and our team reviews it directly. See the full warranty for exclusions and labour terms.

  • 25 Years, White PVC
  • 15 Years, Coloured PVC
  • Non-Prorated
  • Transferable

Labour to replace defective parts is covered for the first two years. Registration and transfer conditions apply.

02

Professional & Reliable
In-House Installation Teams

Your installation is carried out by Norden Seal's own in-house team. From the first measurement through to the final walkthrough, the team takes careful measurements, explains the agreed scope before work starts and completes the installation with attention to fit, finish and the rest of your home.

The crews are Manitobans working out of our own shop, so the person measuring your opening has already seen what this winter does to a window. You have one team to contact before, during and after the work, and one team accountable for the result.

Personalized Solutions &
Individual Approach to Home

No two openings are the same, so nothing here is sold from a standard list. A north-facing bedroom, a bay that carries a window seat and a basement that has to meet egress each need a different unit, and we specify them that way, designed for Manitoba rather than for a milder climate.

Every rough opening is measured in three places and checked for square before anything is ordered, because Red River clay moves and a house that has settled is rarely still square. You can also see the numbers for your own window type and city before anyone visits, using the published price ranges and the calculator.

Why our bay windows

We plan the support, not just the window

A bay projects 16 to 24 inches from the wall, and when one fails it is almost never the glass. It is the support. The weight has to be carried by cable supports anchored into the header above or by knee brackets underneath, and a new bay cut into a flat wall needs a structural header. That support is part of the job we quote and install, not something left for you to discover later.
