Garden Doors

A garden door is a hinged double door onto a patio, deck or balcony: what most people picture when they say “French doors”. Unlike a slider, both panels swing, so you get the full width of the opening as a clear passage. Garden door or sliding patio door? Choose a garden door when you want the full opening clear, for moving furniture, carrying trays out to a deck, or simply the look of a double door standing open on a summer evening. Choose a sliding patio door when the deck or the room is tight and there is nowhere for a swinging panel to go. The swing clearance is the whole decision: a garden door needs roughly the panel width in free space on whichever side it opens. Measure that before you fall in love with the look.

Glass does most of the design work. Garden doors carry more glass than any other hinged door in the house, and the full Norden Seal glass collection is available. Prairie, Colonial and Georgian grills are applied between the panes so the glass cleans as one surface, with Colonial grills making a narrow, tall door read wider and Prairie grills concentrating the pattern at the corners. Integrated aluminium mini-blinds are a time-tested classic, sealed inside the glass unit for light during the day and absolute privacy when closed. Clear glass gives maximum daylight where the door faces a private yard, and semi-private or privacy textures are the answer where the door is overlooked.

A vented sidelite is worth knowing about. It is a narrow fixed panel beside the door containing an openable section, so you can air the room without opening the door itself. That is genuinely useful on a back door in shoulder season, and on any entrance where an open door is a security or pet concern. Available panel widths include 12, 14, 17, 18, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 40 and 42 inches, so a sidelite can be sized to the opening you have rather than the opening the catalogue assumed.

Hinges and locking deserve attention here more than anywhere else. Garden doors carry more weight per panel than a standard entry door and open more often in summer, which puts real demand on the hinges, so Norden Seal offers a range of hinge and multi-point lock options across the collection. Multi-point locking is worth specifying, because a double door has an inherently weaker centre than a single slab and multi-point locking is what compensates for it.

Steel or fiberglass? Both are built to the same system. Steel gives you the highest impact resistance and the lower entry price, while fiberglass resists denting and warping and takes a stained woodgrain finish. On a garden door specifically, fiberglass is worth the premium if the doors face south or west and take real sun and weather, because a garden door’s large glazed area and frequent use expose any dimensional movement quickly.
