Panel configuration comes first. A two-panel door, one fixed and one sliding, is the standard replacement and fits the typical 5 ft or 6 ft rough opening in Prairie homes built from the 1970s onward. A three-panel door puts one or two operating panels across a wider opening, and is the usual choice when a renovation has widened the wall. A four-panel door, with two fixed outer panels and two centre sliders, is the format for great rooms and walkouts where the door is functioning as a wall. Can you replace a sliding door without replacing the frame? Usually not, and usually you should not want to.
