What Is a Casement Window?

A casement window is hinged on one side and opens outward using a crank handle, like a door turned on its side. Because the sash swings into a compression seal rather than sliding past a brush seal, a casement leaks less air than any other operating window style.

You will also see casements called crank windows, hinged windows, or swing-out windows. They are the same product. A casement hinged at the top instead of the side is an awning window.

Choosing a Casement Window

When a casement is the right choice

You want the tightest air seal available, which matters most on north and west elevations.
You want full-opening ventilation. The entire sash opens, not half of it.
You want an unobstructed view through a single pane with no meeting rail across the middle.
The window needs to meet basement egress requirements in a narrow opening.

When to choose something else

A casement is the wrong window where the sash would swing into a walkway, deck, driveway, or narrow side yard. Use a sliding window in those openings instead. Casements also cost more than a slider of the same size, because the multi-point lock and geared operator are more complex than rollers and a latch.

Maximum Size Limitation

All Canadian window companies have a certain size limit for each window they can produce. The chart below demonstrates the maximum standard window sizes for common window types that our production line manufactures. Both maximum sizes can’t be used at the same time. Important is that the maximum square footage is maintained within the parameters given below.

Casement Window Configurations and Styles

Casements are built in five common configurations. The right one depends on the opening width and whether the window also needs to serve as an emergency exit.

Single casement

One hinged sash in one frame. The standard bedroom and bathroom unit.

Double casement

Two hinged sashes side by side in one frame, each with its own crank. This doubles the opening width without making a single sash too wide and heavy for the hinges.

Casement and picture combination

A fixed centre pane with an operating casement on one or both sides. This is the most common living-room configuration: maximum glass area, with ventilation only where you actually need it.

French casement

Two sashes that meet in the middle with no centre post, so the opening is completely clear when both are open. This is the configuration to specify when the window doubles as egress.

Fixed casement

A casement-profile frame with no operating hardware, used to match sightlines beside operating units so an elevation reads as one consistent set of windows.

Hinge direction is specified per unit at no extra cost. The convention is to hinge away from the prevailing wind so an open sash is not caught and strained.

Casement vs Other Window Styles

Casement, awning, slider, and hung windows all ventilate a room, but they seal and open differently. Here is how a casement compares against each one.

Casement vs awning

Both crank outward and both seal by compression, so the difference is orientation. A casement hinges at the side and the whole sash opens, which makes it the better egress window and the better performer on a cold elevation. Casement vs slider

A casement seals tightest because the sash compresses into a gasket, and the entire opening clears when it is open. A slider seals only against brush weatherstripping and never opens more than half its width, but it needs no exterior swing clearance and costs less. Casement vs double hung

A double hung slides vertically, opens to half its height, and suits traditional and heritage elevations. A casement out-performs it on air sealing and ventilation, and meets egress in a much smaller frame. Pick the hung window for the look and for walkway clearance, the casement for performance.

Norden Seal casement windows run from $398 for a small bathroom unit to $1,423 for a large living-room window, installed. A standard bedroom casement falls between $481 and $1,271. A casement and picture combination in a living room ranges from $1,174 to $3,099. Triple pane adds roughly 10 to 15 percent over double pane on the same unit.

Norden Seal casements go up to 38 inches wide by 72 inches tall in double glass, with a maximum area of 18 square feet. In triple glass the maximum width drops to 36 inches and the area limit to 14.5 square feet, because the extra pane adds weight the hinges have to carry. Minimum size is 15.5 inches wide by 18 inches tall.

Yes, and the difference is in the seal rather than the glass. A casement sash compresses against the frame gasket when the crank draws it shut. A sliding window runs on brush weatherstripping that has to stay loose enough for the sash to move, so it can never seal as tightly. With identical glass packages, a casement tests lower for air leakage every time.

Yes, and casements are the most common egress choice in narrow basement openings. Because the whole sash swings clear of the opening, a casement delivers the required 0.35 square metre clear opening in a smaller frame than a slider needs. Hinge the window so the open sash faces away from the prevailing wind, which on the Prairies generally means hinging on the north or west side. Also check what sits outside: avoid swinging a sash into a walkway, deck railing, or gas meter. Norden Seal specifies hinge direction per unit at no extra cost.

Usually the operator arm track is dry or full of grit. Open the window, wipe the track clean, and apply a dry silicone lubricant rather than oil, which attracts dust and makes it worse. If the crank turns but the sash does not move, the operator gearbox has stripped and needs replacing. That is a low-cost part on most units and does not mean replacing the window.

A casement hangs its whole sash from one side, so the hinges and crank carry the full weight every time it opens. That is the first place a casement wears. Ours use stainless steel hinges, a geared heavy-duty operator and a multi-point lock, and we cap the size to match: 38 inches wide in double glass, 36 in triple, with the area limit dropping from 18 to 14.5 square feet when the third pane adds weight.
