What Is a Double Hung Window?

A double hung window has two sashes stacked in one frame, and both of them slide vertically. Open the bottom sash for airflow at floor level, open the top sash to let warm air escape near the ceiling, or open both to create a convection loop through the room. Both sashes tilt inward for cleaning.

A single hung window looks identical from the street but only the bottom sash moves. It costs less, and it is the better choice when the window sits at ground level where the exterior glass is easy to reach anyway.

When a hung window is the right choice

You are matching a heritage or traditional elevation where a crank-out sash would look wrong.
The window faces a walkway, deck, or driveway where a casement cannot swing.
You want upper-floor windows you can clean from inside without a ladder.

When to choose something else

Only half of a hung window ever opens, and like a sliding window it runs on brush weatherstripping rather than a compression gasket. If maximum ventilation or the tightest possible seal matters, for example on a north-facing bedroom in Winnipeg, a casement performs better.

All Canadian window companies have a certain size limit for each window they can produce. Single Hung vs Double Hung: Which Should You Buy?

The practical test is simple. Can you safely reach the outside of that window with a cloth? If yes, a single hung saves money with no real loss. If the window sits on a second storey or above a roofline, pay for the double hung and clean it from inside.

What moves

In a single hung only the bottom sash slides and the top sash is fixed. In a double hung both sashes slide, so you can open the bottom for airflow at floor level, the top to vent warm air at the ceiling, or both together.

Cleaning

A single hung tilts in on the bottom sash only. A double hung tilts in on both, which means the entire exterior face can be washed from inside the room. This is the main reason to pay the difference.

Cost

A double hung typically runs 10 to 20 percent more than a single hung of the same size, because it carries a second set of balances and tilt latches.

In a single hung window only the bottom sash slides and the top sash is fixed. In a double hung window both sashes slide and both tilt inward for cleaning. They look the same from outside. A double hung typically costs 10 to 20 percent more, and it is worth the difference on upper storeys where the exterior glass is hard to reach.

Yes. Release the tilt latches at the top of each sash and the sash pivots into the room, letting you wash the exterior face while standing inside. This is the main practical reason to buy a double hung over a single hung, and it matters most on second-floor and stairwell windows.

They are efficient enough for most applications but they are not the strongest performer. A hung window seals against brush weatherstripping at the meeting rail and along the jambs, which cannot compress the way a casement gasket does. Low-E glass, argon fill and a warm-edge spacer do most of the work on a hung window. On the coldest elevations of a Prairie home, a casement is the better choice.

Rarely, and only in large frames. Because only half the window opens at a time, a hung window needs to be roughly twice the height of a casement to deliver the same 0.35 square metre clear opening required by Canadian code. Hung windows sit in the lower-middle of the range: more than a basic slider because of the balance hardware and tilt latches, and less than a casement of the same size. The sash balances have failed. Each sash is held by a spiral or block-and-tackle balance inside the jamb, and when one breaks the sash drops. It is a repairable part rather than a reason to replace the window, and on a vinyl frame the balance can usually be swapped in under an hour. If both sashes have failed and the frame is over 25 years old, replacement often makes more sense.
