What Is a Picture Window?

A picture window is a single fixed pane of glass in a frame, with no operating hardware. It does not open. Because there is no sash to seal and no moving parts to wear, a picture window has the lowest air leakage and the longest service life of any window style, and it costs less per square foot than an equivalent operating unit.

Fixed window and picture window describe the same product. Builders and manufacturers tend to say fixed. Homeowners tend to say picture.

Choosing a Picture Window

When a picture window is the right choice

The view matters more than the airflow.
The opening is large, or out of reach in a stairwell, gable, or vaulted ceiling.
You want to maximise winter solar gain on a south-facing wall.

When to choose something else

Do not use a fixed window where the room has no other source of ventilation, and never where the window serves a basement bedroom, because a fixed unit can never meet egress requirements. The standard solution to both problems is a combination unit: a fixed picture centre with an operating casement beside it or an awning above it.

All Canadian window companies have a certain size limit for each window they can produce. The chart below demonstrates the maximum standard window sizes for common window types that our production line manufactures. Both maximum sizes can’t be used at the same time. Important is that the maximum square footage is maintained within the parameters given below.

Picture Window Sizes

Picture windows are the largest units Norden Seal manufactures, because there is no sash weight for hardware to carry. Sizes are quoted width by height in inches.

Common single picture sizes

36 x 48, 48 x 48, 48 x 60, 60 x 48, 64 x 36, 72 x 48, 72 x 60, 96 x 48, and 96 x 72.

Beyond the single-pane maximum

Larger openings are built as a mulled assembly: two or more units joined in the frame with a structural mullion, which reads as one window from inside. Large glass also gets heavy quickly. A 96 by 72 triple pane unit is a four-person lift, and that is reflected in the installation cost.

Double Pane or Triple Pane for a Picture Window?

Glazing choice makes more difference on a picture window than on any other style, because the glass is effectively the whole window. Large fixed panes on north and east walls radiate cold, and a third lite raises the interior surface temperature enough to change how the room feels near the glass.

There is no difference in product, only in vocabulary. Manufacturers and builders say fixed window because the defining feature is that the sash does not operate. Homeowners say picture window because the defining feature is the view. Both terms describe a single non-opening glazed unit.

Yes. A picture window has no sash-to-frame joint, no weatherstripping to compress or wear, and no hardware penetrating the frame, so air leakage is effectively zero. On a like-for-like glass package a fixed unit outperforms every operating style. The trade-off is that it contributes nothing to ventilation.

Beyond the single-pane maximum, large openings are built as mulled assemblies of two or more units joined with a structural mullion.

No, under any circumstances. Canadian code requires a basement bedroom window to open to a clear area of at least 0.35 square metres without keys or tools. A fixed window does not open. If a basement room is used for sleeping it needs a casement or a slider that meets the egress requirements.

Condensation on the room side of the glass means the interior surface is colder than the dew point of the indoor air. On a large fixed pane this shows up first at the bottom edge, where the spacer bar conducts cold. A warm-edge spacer and triple pane both raise the edge temperature. Moisture between the panes is a different problem: that means the sealed unit has failed and the glass pack needs replacing.
